Why
Emotions Matter
It
all started in the middle of the 17th century when a great thinker
challenged the accepted truth that the mind is a reasoning machine,
with emotions standing in the way of its optimal activity. While
this maverick philosopher, Spinoza, was not very successful
at convincing others of an alternative theory of the mind's
activity, he argued that emotions weigh heavily into all the
mind's processes and are an integral component of decision making.
Over three hundred years later, science finally caught up with
the great thinker. Advanced technology enabled neuroscience
to study brain-imaging in a manner that finally bestowed upon
Spinoza the validation he deserved: in the world of motivation,
decision making, and action, sub-conscious emotions are a major
player and often act as the foundation for our decisions and
behaviors.
